#4397, Musical Journeys

New Sounds | Sep 24, 2021

Hear unusual meetings of different musical traditions for this hour-long show in work by Silk Road tabla player Sandeep Das and the HUM Ensemble, from their Delhi to Damasus record, a Punjabi and Welsh song hybrid in music by Ghazalaw, and a Persian and Indian classical combination in the group Ghazal.

From Grammy-nominated tabla player Sandeep Das (of the Silk Road Ensemble) comes an album of North Indian classical and Middle Eastern music - Delhi to Damascus. The Harmony and Universality thru Music Ensemble (HUM) is Kinan Adnawi (Syrian Oud), Rajib Karmakar (Indian Sitar), and Suhail Yusuf Khan (Indian Sarangi) together with tabla of Sandeep Das, and they aim to take a musical journey without needing a passport.

Then, hear music by Ghazalaw, a duo of Mumbai singer Tauseef Akhtar and Welsh singer-songwriter Gwyneth Glyn. With lyrics sung in both Punjabi and Welsh, they’ve merged their two ancient traditions together to the accompaniment of harp, tabla, guitar and harmonium. There's also a live performance by Edgar Meyer, Jerry Douglas, and Sam Bush of "From Ankara To Izmir" recorded in the WNYC studios.

Then, Indian and Persian classical music meet in music by Ghazal, who are kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor together with vocalist and sitar player Shujaat Husain Khan. Also, hear music by Jordi Savall’s Hesperion XXI project from an album of musical travels based around the 14th Century Moroccan scholar Ibn Battuta, who traversed all of the Muslim world and beyond. The tune features Madagascan valiha star Rajery and Moroccan oud maestro Driss El Maloumi. - Caryn Havlik
