#4403, New Music for Flutes
Hear flute in different contexts in recent music by Nicole Mitchell and Christopher Cerrone, along with a classic Steve Reich work for multiple layers of flute featuring Claire Chase.
Listen to music by composer, flutist, and bandleader Nicole Mitchell and her Black Earth Ensemble which features Japanese shakuhachi flute, and musicians from the thriving improv and new music circles in conjunction with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Inspired by the sci-fi writings of Afrofuturist author Octavia E. Butler, and what might happen in a society where technology and nature are in-sync, the music is from a record, Mandorla Awakening II Emerging Worlds commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. There’s also a work for string quartet and shakuhachi from Brooklyn Rider and shakuhachi player, Kojiro Umezaki, (also in Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble).
There’s music by Russian composer and rock musician Pavel Karmanov, who is a fan of American minimalist composer Steve Reich. Rhythmic and motoric, hear Karmanov’s “Different Rains,” a nod to Reich’s “Different Trains.” Then, listen to Steve Reich’s work for layers of flute, “Vermont Counterpoint,” with flutes played by Claire Chase. Also, hear music by Christopher Cerrone his Liminal Highway, written in 2015 for flutist Tim Munro, and inspired by John K. Samson’s poem of the same name.
