#4409: Music Bridging Conflict and Cultures

Hear pieces bringing together Greek and Turkish musicians, Christian Europeans and Muslim North Africans; an Israeli violinist and Iranian percussionist, and more.  Listen to selections from a recent record SYNERGIA, dedicated to the rich musical heritage of Cyprus, where musical director Dimitri Psonis has brought together songs and dances from the ancient Cypriot traditions, along with singers and instrumentalists from the island, as well as Greece and Turkey. Dimitri Psonis is a multi-instrumentalist (santur, oud, lauto, tzurás, tambura) who performs with Jordi Savall’s Hesperion XXI.

Then, hear music from iterations of Jon Balke’s collaborative project SIWAN (a word that means “balance") where musicians from Arabic and Persian cultures play with Norway’s Barokksolsisten. First, Jon Balke and Algerian singer Mona Boutchebak make connections between Arabic music, Andalusian classical music and European baroque music. Then, hear musicians from Norway, Denmark, Israel, Iran, and Morocco, including singer Amina Alaoui, from another edition of Balke’s SIWAN project.

Also, listen to the late composer and ethnomusicologist David Fanshawe’s representation of a trip down the Nile, where the Islamic call to prayer meets part of the Latin mass sung in Greek. Plus, listen to a piece from the Crusades, where Arab and European scales clash and resolve.  - Caryn Havlik
