#4412, Mystical Music

New Sounds | Nov 3, 2021

Hear mystical works inspired by the Sufi tradition and/or by the Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam by Sarathy Korwar, Jozef van Wissem, and the Soundwalk Collective.

Listen to a fusion of tabla, electronics, western jazz, and the traditional folk music of the Sidi community in India (which combines East African, Sufi and Indian influences), by percussionist and bandleader Sarathy Korwar. Then, there’s new music by Falsa, a New York-based 14th century Sufi chamber fusion ensemble. They make traditional melodies into modern meditations with their combination of vocals, harmonium, electric bass VI, Spanish guitar, drum set, tabla, Carnatic violin, and trumpet.

Hear music by the Soundwalk Collective, a rotating cast of New York-based musicians, with Sufi chants and prayers of the Sufi Group of Sheikh Ibrahim, recorded in the holy city of Harar, Ethiopia. Coupled with these hypnotic chants, hear Philip Glass at the piano and Mulatu Astatke. It's from Mummer Love, a record on which Patti Smith also features, reciting the late poetry of Arthur Rimbaud on most other tracks. Also, hear music from Moroccan Rabbi Haim Louk and the Arab-Andalousian Orchestra of Fez, made on location by John Schaefer.

Plus, there’s work from David Hykes and Harmonic Choir which explores the Hallejulah in all Abrahamic faiths- Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The work has no electronics – only the voices of the Harmonic Choir producing those overtones. There’s also new music for lute by Jozef van Wissem, inspired by northern European branch of Christian mysticism from his recent record, we adore you, you have no name. And more. - Caryn Havlik
