#4417, Echoes of Thomas Tallis

New Sounds | Oct 6, 2020

Listen to the hit motet, Spem in alium (Sing and Glorify) by Renaissance English composer Thomas Tallis. The work is famous for having 40 separate vocal lines and basically winning at polyphony. 2020 happens to be the 450th anniversary of the motet. Hear an arrangement of the iconic motet for Kronos Quartet, and a reflection of that Tallis work also with 40 separate parts by Scottish composer James MacMillan for ORA Singers.

ORA Singers perform TALLIS: "Spem In Alium," and MACMILLAN: "Vidi aquam":

Then, there’s a solo cello work by Pulitzer Prize-winning vocalist, violinist and composer Caroline Shaw in response to another Tallis motet. Shaw’s “In manas tuas” for solo cello is based on a 16th C. motet by Thomas Tallis, and is intended to capture the sensation of a single moment of hearing the motet in the particular and remarkable space of Christ Church in New Haven, CT. Plus, hear a small portion of the Mass for the Endangered by Sarah Kirkland Snider, the Alleluia for strings and chorus. Listen also to the choral group named for the English composer, The Tallis Scholars, performing “Mystic Prayer to the Holy Spirit” by the late Sir John Tavener, and more.
