#4421, Music Made During Quarantine
Hear some music made in quarantine for this episode of New Sounds. There’s music by Anglo-Polish composer Alice Zawadzki, Anglo-Indian composer and drummer Sarathy Korwar, and London-based Syrian kanun player and composer Maya Youssef.
Anglo-Polish singer and composer, violinist and pianist Alice Zawadzki. She has scored episodes of Black Mirror, collaborated with Korean traditional musicians, and performed as a vocal soloist in countless new music works. Hear her commission for the BBC Arts and Arts Council England’s Culture in Quarantine programme, the immersive soundwalk “My Boy of the Birds,” presented by Opera North.
Also, from the same Opera North series of soundwalks, listen to some music by London-based Syrian composer, Maya Youssef who is a virtuoso player of qanun, a traditional Syrian 78-stringed plucked zither. Listen to her piece, “Silver Lining.” Then, listen to music by drummer, composer, and bandleader Sarathy Korwar from London, and his piece “Stayin’ Alone,” recorded in quarantine by individual collaborators to a reference track, which was later removed.
There’s music from the Juno-nominated composer, producer, and sound artist Joshua Van Tassel for one of the earliest electronic music instruments, Ondea, an Ondes Martenot-inspired instrument. It’s from his quarantine record, Dance Music Volume II: More Songs For Slow Motion, building on a collection of pieces begun in 2014. Also, hear atmospheric guitar from Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg from his quarantine collection of works, and solo piano recorded on a balcony by German pianist and composer Martin Kolstedt. Music by Irish composer and guitarist Dave Flynn, from his Music in the Time of Covid rounds out the show.
