Hear a Swiss brass band take on Indonesian gamelan music, Afrobeat from New York's own Antibalas, and brass music from both North and South India courtesy of Red Baraat and Aditya Prakash Ensemble. Also, listen to a little psychedelic cosmic jazz by Sweden's Goran Kajfes Subtropic Arkestra led by Turkish trumpeter Goran Kajfes, Hoodna Orchestra from Tel Aviv playing music from the golden age of Ethiopian music, and Balkan brass from the indefatigable Fanfare Ciocarlia, featuring the "Queen of the Gypsies," Esma Redzepova (d. 2016.)
Thanks to Bandcamp columnist Dave Sumner’s fine recommendation, listen to Andreas Tschopp’s Bubaran. The quintet is a pocket chamber orchestra led by Swiss brass player, educator, and composer Tschopp, who invites listeners into the sound world of Indonesian gamelan orchestras for some ravishing moments of unexpected brassy brilliance. The music comes from the 2020 record, Tumbuk, a word that in gamelan music refers to a common tone which occurs in two differently tuned gamelan scales – and is also a fine way to understand a moment where microtonality, scales, timbres and sound effects meet the playfulness of a jazz band.
There’s also music from Sweden’s Goran Kajfes, a Turkish trumpeter/composer who leads the new music-chamber-world-jazz-band called the Subtropic Arkestra. While the “Arkestra” is a nod to Sun Ra’s legendary cosmic jazz ensemble, Kaifes and the band combine Brazilian groove music and German psychedelic electronica together, with a dash of progressive jazz/rock as he takes on a Turkish psych-pop song. Plus, vocalist Aditya Prakash lays down rhythmic Carnatic grooves over a brass band with the Aditya Prakash Ensemble, and Red Baraat’s Brass and Dhol incites a dance party. All that, and more!
