#4428, Violin, Plus...

New Sounds | Dec 4, 2022

There's music for violin, with the possible addition of voice, electronics, resonant spaces, and/or inventive bowing techniques by Laura Cannell, Mari Kimura, Iva Bittova, and Jessica Moss.

From English violinist, vocalist, composer and improviser Laura Cannell, hear work for violins - both octave violin, and overbowed violin. Commissioned by The Wapping Project to capture the resonance of their former building, the album The Earth With Her Crowns is a collection of works that were improvised and recorded inside the cavernous Wapping Hydraulic Power Station.

Then, listen to new music using electronics by Montreal violinist Jessica Moss which echoes the sounds of Jewish cantorial music and comes from her reflections on finding new ways to mourn together. She writes that “Since I was a kid, Jewish music has represented a kind of unspecified mourning to me. Engendering a profound sense of sadness, death, and a deep connection to renewal, to this day it’s the music I feel the deepest affinity with.” (Bandcamp liner notes.)

Also hear music generated by violin and subharmonics by Mari Kimura – achieved by a 3-step technique that she describes as "clunk, drag, and release" to uncover notes as much as an octave below that of the low G string. Plus, listen to violin in a resonant space by Swiss composer Paul Giger, recorded in Chartres cathedral and work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, violinist, and vocalist Caroline Shaw, recorded in the cathedral-like Winter Garden at Brookfield Place in 2013. Plus, music from Czech violinist, vocalist, actor, composer, improviser Iva Bittova, and more. - Caryn Havlik
