There's music about the cursed wood with its seductive dangers by Finnish folk violinist and vocalist Meriheini Luoto, Ukraine’s Mariana Sadovska, and Brussels/Paris-based band Lolomis.
Listen to work from a two album series by violinist and vocalist Meriheini Luoto, largely based on Finnish folklore about metsänpeitto: a “belief that one can become lost in the forest and be transported into another reality; one where the forest is timeless, reversed and distorted.” (Bandcamp liner notes.) Then, hear work by Franco-Belgian band Lolomis in tribute to modern witches, from a record Boukane, which enters the path of cursed wood, one that is both frightening and attractive.
Also hear music by Lisa Bielawa about a young woman accused of witchcraft. It’s from her video and online opera called “Vireo, The Spiritual Biography of a Witch's Accuser,” featuring the San Francisco Girls Chorus and Kronos Quartet. Then, listen to work by Ukraine’s Mariana Sadovska with the San Francisco women’s choir, Kitka, and their record of Rusalki stories, some where spirits of women seek revenge for having been wronged.
