#4453, New Sounds Live: Yasmin Williams and Kaki King in Brookfield Place
Kaki King and Yasmin Williams are guitarists and composers who create songs without words using their 6-string instruments in innovative ways. Kaki King taps, bends, and invents ways to extend the guitar’s sound, most recently having added bridge called a Passerelle to her guitar to turn six strings into twelve strings that might sound rather zither-like. Virginia-based Yasmin Williams plays the guitar from above, tapping and shredding, sometimes hammering and bowing the strings, multitasking as her own band with tap shoes and a kalimba for good measure.

Both guitarists played a socially-distant concert with no audience back in October 2020, which was both recorded and filmed. Hear songs without words from Yasmin’s latest record, Urban Driftwood, complete with kalimba and tap shoes. Then, listen to a set of instrumental pieces from Kaki King, some using the Passerelle bridge, from her latest record, Modern Yesterdays. As a finale, the two guitarists play Yasmin Wililams’ unreleased composition, “Instant Happiness” together, and it is a moment of hold-your-breath magic. - Caryn Havlik
