Michael Nyman - A Birthday Celebration

Evening Music | May 6, 2010
Michael Nyman celebrates his sixtieth birthday today, and we celebrate, too, by bringing you music from the Peter Greenaway film, "Drowning by Numbers," as well as Nyman's Double Concerto for Saxophone and Cello, composed on a commission from Mazda Cars (UK) Limited. On March 30th and 31st, you can hear the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio live at the 92nd Street Y, playing piano trios by Mozart, Tower, and Arensky. Listen to them right here this evening as they perform Stanley Silverman's "In Celebration," a work commissioned for the group that honors an eclectic bunch of Americans including Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Miller, and even Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. Quite a musical tribute! We mustn't forget to mention Marga Richter's substantial triple concerto (violin, cello, piano), "Variations and Interludes on Themes from Monteverdi and Bach."
