A Hunky-Dory Hungarian Evening

It’s a hunky-dory Hungarian evening, so gather round the camp fire, serve up some goulash, sprinkle on the paprika, and prepare to dance!
To start us off this evening, the Nash Ensemble will bring us Mozart’s Flute Quartet No. 3. Not much later, it’s time for us to enjoy our Hungarian selections: “Hungarian Dances” Nos. 5, 6, 7, and 8 by Johannes Brahms, played with panache by the piano duo, Edward and Anne Louise Turgeon. Then it’s on to Bela Bartok and his “Hungarian Pictures” as performed by Pierre Boulez and the Chicago Symphony. To cleanse the aural palate, a Concerto for Two Violins and Two Cellos, RV 564, by Antonio Vivaldi, Il Giardino Armonico doing the honors.
Ernst Ansermet orchestrated Debussy’s “Six epigraphes antiques,” which we’ll hear with Tadaaki Otaka conducting the BBC Welsh Symphony. Did I mention our birthday boy, yet? It’s Paul McCartney, born this day in 1942. We’ll listen to his “Spiral,” orchestrated by Richard Rodney Bennett, and performed by the London Symphony under Lawrence Foster. Many happy returns, Paul!
