It’s time to pour yourself a Cuba Libre, chill out and listen while “Brassil plays Brazil.” (Brassil’s a brass quintet specializing in Northeastern Brazilian music.)
We begin the evening with Mozart’s ever-popular Sinfonia concertanteChristoph Eschenbach conducting the North German Radio Orchestra, with Midori on violin and Nobuko Imai on viola. You can hear it again, live, with other performers, at Lincoln Center on August 17th and 18th.
Then it’s time to swill down that aforementioned Cuba Libre, as the Quintetto Brassil offers us three cirandas (children’s songs) by Heitor Villa-Lobos and a work by Jose Ursicino da Silva (“Duda”) called “Coletanea ’93.”
In between, pianist William Bolcom will play Darius Milhaud “Saudades do Brazil,” Set I. Pianist Joseph Kubera is featured in the Piano Concerto by Beth Anderson, a New York City based composer whose “Swales” are becoming increasingly popular.
“The Spirit of Gravity” is the seventh and last movement of Tony Banks’s “Seven,” a suite for orchestra. Banks says the movement “travels through a number of different musical ideas only to end up finally just where it began.”
