#4470, Songs About Climate Change

New Sounds | Apr 2, 2023

Hear work by Kazakh-British Galya Bisengalieva, along with music by New York trio Son Lux, Norway's Marja Mortensson and Daniel Herskedal, and New Orleans-based band Blato Zlato.

Kazakh-British composer, violinist, and producer Galya Bisengalieva, released the 2020 album Aralkum, named after the desert that exists where the Aral Sea used to be. In what has become a major man-made climate disaster, the Aral Sea has been shrinking due to irrigation and drought. Listen to Bisengalieva perform these works remotely from an edition of our Soundcheck Podcast.

There’s also music from New Orleans-based band Blato Zlato, whose specialty is Bulgarian and Balkan songs. As the band is living in a city below sea level, the title of the tune, “Vodata Teche” translates to “The Water Flows” and calls forth a conversation on the reality of climate change. Then, hear music from Norway by Marja Mortensson, who performs the traditional singing of the Sámi people -rather like chanting- yoik, along with a drone and groove by tuba player Daniel Herskedal, together with a string quartet on the work, “A Storm Is Coming”.

Listen to work by New York composer Paola Prestini, in collaboration with climatologist Andrew Kruczkiewicz, who studies early warning systems for extreme events such as floods, storm surge from tropical cyclones, wildfires and landslides. Also, hear the French electronic music producer Rone and work that came about from a collaboration with the choreography collective (LA) HORDE and the Ballet National de Marseille. Plus, listen to electronically-enhanced music by New York trio Son Lux, "the genre-less dream" of composer Ryan Lott, guitarist Rafiq Bhatia & drummer Ian Chang, and more.
