#4485, With ETHEL, Remotely via The Greene Space

New Sounds | May 12, 2022

New York-based ETHEL is a string quartet that has been championing new music from often surprising corners of the music world for years. Their range is vast, wide, and deep, including arranging medieval composer Hildegard of Bingen and music by rock star Todd Rundgren, collaborations with Native American flutist Robert Mirabal, guitarist Kaki King, Argentine songwriter/producer Juana Molina, and South African bassist/composer Carlo Mombelli. Also, ETHEL helped to open The Greene Space in 2009, with the WNYC-commissioned work, “Radio,” by Argentine-American composer Osvaldo Golijov for hyper-accordion, string quartet and laptop, featuring samples from the WNYC archives.

For this New Sounds, hear ETHEL play new music by Lebanese violinist and composer Layale Chaker inspired by Somali-British poet Warsan Shire, and an arrangement of noisey-joyful, eyeball-singeing electronic music by composer Dan Friel (Parts & Labor, Upper Wilds) in a remote program hosted by our ground floor performance venue, The Greene Space. Plus, listen to versions of “Wa Habibi (My Love)” from Greek singer Maria Farantouri and as arranged by composer Osvaldo Golijov for soprano Dawn Upshaw in his work, “Ayre.” – Caryn Havlik
