#4486, Music Inspired by the Jacobite Rebellion(S)

New Sounds | Apr 20, 2021

For this New Sounds, hear music inspired by the Jacobite Rebellions, a movement to reinstall the exiled Stuart king James II (Latin: Jacobus) and his descendants, which lasted roughly from 1688 until 1750. There were five attempts at restoration, The Battle of the Boyne in 1690, an attempt in 1708, the Fifteen Rebellion in 1715, and another in 1719, but the Forty-five Rebellion, from 1745, is the one that may be the most romanticized (Britannica.com). In one last attempt by the exiled Charles Edward Stuart (“Bonnie Prince Charlie”) to regain the British throne for his father, James Francis Edward Stuart, The Forty-five Rebellion culminated in April 1746 at the Battle of Culloden near Inverness in the defeat of the Jacobites.

From Glasgow, listen to the tribal drum and pipe band Clann An Drumma (Children of the Drum), and an original song about the Battle of Culloden. Then, listen to “Ye Jacobites” by the French-Italian Dublin-based duo Varo. Then, there’s electronic music by New York composer, producer, and sound engineer Daniel Palkowski – an improvisation on “The Skye Boat Song,” which is a tune also known as “Isle of Skye,” and lately, has been used as the theme song for the time-traveling historical drama Outlander. Plus, hear Scottish band, Mouth Music, recorded live at WNYC in 1991, and their song, "S'Muladach," which translates to “Sad I Am And Lonely,” perhaps imagining Bonnie Prince Charlie in exile.

Folk-rockers Steeleye Span deliver a version of one of the biting satirical songs of the Jacobites with “Cam Ye O’er Frae France,” and how illogical it was to have a puppet protestant German king who hardly spoke a word of English. Also, there’s a 1990’s Chieftans collaboration with Sting, and a song about the Jacobite Rebellion -a deep cut- from Genesis. And more. - Caryn Havlik
