Sir William Walton was born 103 years ago this day (1902), and received a number of awards during his lifetime, not the least of which was his knighthood in 1951.
We hear a number of Walton’s compositions, including a suite from his score for the Laurence Olivier’s magnificent 1943-44 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s "Henry V."
William Boughton conducts the English String Orchestra. Walton’s dramatic choral work, "Belshazzar’s Feast," written in 1930–31, made him a bright star in the British musical firmament. We hear it this evening, as Robert Shaw conducts the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
Sir Richard Rodney Bennett is another Brit, another knight, and another 3/29 Birthday Boy (1936). Bennett’s output also included film scores, but we honor him this evening by listening to his Clarinet Quintet, performed by clarinetist Charles Russo, violinists Gerald Tarack and Jeanne Ingraham, violist Elizabeth Handman, and cellist Lanny Paykin.
