#4493: Irish and Irish-American Music

New Sounds | Jun 3, 2023

There’s Irish and Irish-American music from Shrines (aka Carrie Erving), fiddler Dan Trueman, Dublin-based duo Varo, Oregon-based song collector Peia, and Irish-American quintet The Gloaming.

Shrines, the moniker of New York singer Carrie Erving, has studied sean nós (old style) singing, and re-imagines traditional folk ballads, which she learned while living in Ireland from a group of renowned singers including Iarla Ó Lionáird and Karan Casey.

Then, there’s music for hardanger d’amore (an instrument somewhere between a Norwegian hardingfele and a viola d'amore with 5+5 strings) by composer/fiddle player/Princeton University professor Dan Trueman. Also, hear music for two hybrid 10-string fiddles that combines Norwegian and Irish fiddling from the duo of Dan Trueman and Dublin-born fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh.

Listen to music from the five versatile musicians of The Gloaming: gifted Irish fiddler Martin Hayes, Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill, Irish master of the Norwegian hardanger fiddle Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, sean-nós  master singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, and New York pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman). Hear their “Song 44,” adapted from an 800-year-old Irish poem about a man who sees the woman he loves in his dreams.

Then, the North Atlantic Trio combines Irish, Scottish, Old-Time Appalachian and Bluegrass music as an American girl plays harp in mostly Scottish way with a Scottish guy who plays dobro in a mostly American way with an Irish guy who plays percussion anyway. Also, hear "Streets of Forbes" from Dublin-based duo Varo, made up of Lucie Azconaga and Consuelo Breschi (and special guests.) Plus, listen to an Irish leaving song, a lament of one forced abroad through poverty and famine from Oregon-based song collector Peia, and more. - Caryn Havlik
