Exquisite Rodrigo

Evening Music | May 6, 2010
Stay tuned to hear an exquisite rendering of “Concierto de aranjuez,” probably the most well known and most beloved of the many beautiful works by Joaquin Rodrigo.

Manuel Barrueco is the guitar soloist in Rodrigo’s challenging composition, with Placido Domingo bringing his Latin instincts to bear as he leads the Philharmonia Orchestra. Did we remember to note that Rodrigo was born 104 years ago today? Rodolfo Halffter, another Spanish composer (but one who lived mostly in Mexico), wrote the ballet music for “La madrugada del panadero” (The Awakening of the Baker). The story: A baker is playing around with several young men behind her husband’s back. When he comes home unexpectedly, she hides them in sacks of flour; discovered while trying to escape, they stand like statues and the naïve husband thinks he’s having a vision. The baker, to continue the deception, places them in the oven, from which they emerge next morning, badly scorched, to the amusement of her early morning customers. Well, the music makes more sense than the plot, and you will enjoy the performance by the Mexico Philharmonic Orchestra under Fernando Lozano’s baton.

More traditionally, we bring you Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante in E-flat, which features violinist Daniel Majeske and violist Robert Vernon, with Christoph Von Dohnanyi conducting the Cleveland Orchestra.
