It’s a show of brass-forward songs and instrumentals, showcasing works by Conrad Tao and the Westerlies, David Karsten Daniels and Fight the Big Bull, and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble with Moses Sumney.

Listen to collaborative music by pianist/composer Conrad Tao and the “accidental brass quartet”, The Westerlies, from a 2021 album, Bricolage. Recorded in a rural cabin in 2019, these brass works with piano are the results of improvisations and experiments with minimal editing and poke at the boundaries between jazz, roots and chamber music. Then, hear “Soon it will be Fire,” a reimagining of a song from Sapphie by Richard Youngs, (based in Scotland,) featuring singer Moses Sumney, and arranged by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Marvel at Sumney’s seductive and mesmerizing falsetto, sumptuously supported by understated brass which floats in and out of the picture in one giant lovely crescendo.

Plus, listen to a soaring collaboration from big band Fight the Big Bull (of Richmond, VA), led guitarist, composer and arranger Matthew E. White, with singer/songwriter David Karsten Daniels and their adaptations of poetry by Henry David Thoreau. Plus, hear music from Fight the Big Bull, featuring trumpeter Steven Bernstein as co-arranger, and co-producer from their record, All is Gladness in the Kingdom. And more.
