The music of Witold Lutoslawski

Evening Music | May 6, 2010
The American Symphony Orchestra under Leon Botstein will devote their November 18th concert at Avery Fisher to the music of Witold Lutoslawski. Clarinetist Richard Stoltzman plays his “Dance Preludes” this evening.

You should stay tuned for Jim Hiscott’s “Waves of Passion” for button accordion, piano, cello, and contrabass. This interesting combo is employed in the interest of bringing us the darker, sultrier side of tango, according to the composer, who adds that he also brings to the work the contrasting elements of joy and elation. “The piece progresses in rondo-like form through a variety of alternating emotions and states of mind, from desperation to elation, from disembodied reflection to aggressively physical dance rhythms.” Enjoy!
