Andras Schiff Plays Bach's English Suites

Evening Music | May 6, 2010
Pianist Andras Schiff shines in the first-hour spotlight, playing the third of Johann Sebastian Bach’s English Suites. No one knows why the suites are called “English,” but with good music, does that matter?

Mozart is represented this evening by hornist William Purvis and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, who bring us this Horn Concerto No. 3 in E-flat. Conni Ellisor’s “Blackberry Winter,” named for a Tennessee colloquialism which calls late spring frosts by that appellation, is played by the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, appropriately enough, under the leadership of Paul Gambill, with dulcimer and music box contributions by Stephen Seifert.
