#4517, From the Soundcheck Podcast: Priya Darshini and Ólafur Arnalds

New Sounds | Aug 5, 2023

There’s music from the Soundcheck Podcast series of live performances with music by both the Icelandic composer and pianist Ólafur Arnalds, and the Mumbai-born, Brooklyn-based singer Priya Darshini.

Ólafur Arnalds is an Icelandic composer and multi-instrumentalist whose work toes the line between classical music, electronic music and film scores, mostly with a delicate undercurrent of minimalism. His last record, the 2016 Island Songs, was made from a seven week recording journey around towns and villages in Iceland, collaborating with local musicians. For his latest introspective album, some kind of peace, which reflects on connections and rituals, he has incorporated piano, strings, and electronics, but also live and taped voices. Ólafur joins us from home in Iceland, solo on a pianette, or mini-piano, to play recent music.

Also, listen to the cross-cultural approach to songwriting by Brooklyn-based Mumbai-born singer, composer, bandleader, and ultra-marathoner Priya Darshini. Her musical studies range from Indian Classical music and ghazals (devotional songs) to jazz, and she has experience in Mumbai indie rock bands and on Bollywood film soundtracks besides. Darshini joins us with a band that includes hammered dulcimer, bass, and drums, performing music remotely from the Brooklyn venue Wild Birds. - Caryn Havlik
