Listen to the song cycle/theatre piece by English composer and violist Jocelyn Pook called Drawing Life: Remembering Terezín, a look at the “art camp” using archived voices, live singing and ensemble.

Inspired by the drawings and artworks of the children interned in Terezín concentration camp, and using sound archives of recorded voices and train sounds, the work is a moving look at the so-called “art camp” with its poetry, music, writers, artists, and the children before those prisoners were moved on to the death camps. Building on these recorded voices, Pook layers the voices of singers Melanie Pappenheim and Lorin Sklamberg atop the archival source material and weaves in a mixed instrumental ensemble of strings, clarinet, accordion, and harp. Composer Jocelyn Pook joins us remotely to present portions of the piece for this New Sounds. - Caryn Havlik
