#4551, A Sense of Place

New Sounds | Dec 5, 2022

Hear works specific to their place (most with some killer natural reverb), like the National Concert Hall in Dublin, the Taj Mahal, the Abbey of Pope Clement VI in France, and the Winter Garden atrium at Brookfield Place.

Listen to collaborations recorded in various locations in the historic National Concert Hall building in Dublin - old lecture theatres, dis-used stairwells, and a former morgue. Listen to Dublin new music group Crash Ensemble together with singer/composer Lisa Hannigan, songwriter/guitarists Adrian Crowley and Bridget Mae Power, and musician/songwriter Katie Kim with composer/musician/mastering engineer Sean Mac Erlaine.

Also, hear some of “Song of the Human” by Pete M. Wyer, as performed within an 18-channel sound installation, iForest, which was mounted at Brookfield Place in 2016. The work features Philadelphia choir The Crossing conducted by Donald Nally, 18 simultaneous recordings of the sounds of birds in England at the dawn, and a passing thunderstorm.

Then there’s trombone music by American trombonist, didgeridoo player, improviser, and composer. Stuart Dempster from a recording made in the Great Abbey of Clement VI in the south of France –part of the Papal Palace in Avignon. There are no electronics of any kind, just Dempster's trombone and the reverb of the space. Plus, listen to work recorded inside the Taj Mahal by Paul Horn, and more. - Caryn Havlik
