#4563, Music in Alternate Tunings
Hear music in alternate tunings by American composer Dylan Mattingly which just premiered about two months ago, electro-acoustic work by experimental guitarist/composer Duane Pitre, and the late French-American composer Elodie Lauten (1950-2014.)
Dylan Mattingly, the American composer, cellist, and self-described Pacific Ocean enthusiast, is also the executive and co-artistic director of NY-based new-music group Contemporaneous. Listen to his work, Sunt Lacrimae Rerum (these are the tears of things), written for the LA Philharmonic New Music Group, calling for two harps and two alternately-tuned pianos, as played at the Ojai Music Festival.
Then, hear music by the late Elodie Lauten based on the Earth’s day/night cycle, and in non-Western tunings. It’s some of her “The Gaia Cycle,” made with a Proteus keyboard, which enabled the alternate tunings, recorded at WNYC in 1994. There’s also work by experimental composer and musician Duane Pitre, once guitarist with San Diego based post-hardcore band Camera Obscura. Hear “The Days Long” for justly tuned piano and electronics from his 2021 record, Omniscient Voices. And more. - Caryn Havlik
