#4570, Music With Piano

New Sounds | Dec 8, 2021

Two is a crowd around the piano with music by Polish duo Hania Rani and Dobrawa Czocher, German sound pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius with Tim Story, and German-Swiss duo Grandbrothers.

There’s new music by Polish pianist and composer Hania Rani with cellist Dobrawa Czocher, and a motoric piece called “Con Moto,” from their adventurous and mesmerizing album of original work, Inner Symphonies. Then hear brand new music by Brighton-based pianist, violinist, and composer Poppy Ackroyd where she plays the keyboard and strums the strings inside. That's from her 2021 record, Pause. Listen also to duo music from AVAWaves, the classically trained duo of Anna Phoebe and Aisling Brouwer – and their ambient soundscapes based on intricate interplay between violin and piano.

There’s also music made at the same piano, but not at the same time, by German sound pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius and American composer Tim Story. Roedelius, who was one half of the German "Krautrock" duo Cluster, laid down some “impromptu piano études” and Story later added his own parts for an album of works called, 4 Hands, due out in January 2022. Plus, hear music from German-Swiss duo Grandbrothers, who use any  and all parts of the piano as a sound source, live processing it into a combination of minimalism, classical music, and electronic dance music.

From the record, Corollaries, listen to music by composer and pianist Lubomyr Melnyk (of Ukrainian origin now based in Sweden) together with composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick (of American origin now based in Ireland), and their updated take on the "continuous music" style of performance that Melnyk pioneered in the late 1970s and '80s. Then, listen to music by cellist and composer Rebecca Foon, who often records as Saltland, from her 2020 record, Waxing Moon, which includes piano and voice, along with her cello and electronics. And more.
