#4577, The Flamenco Influence

Hear the Flamenco influence in music by guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela, composer and neuroscientist Dave Soldier, both for small mixed ensemble and from his new record with violinist Miranda Cuckson.  

Flamenco is both song (cante) and dance (baile) that originated in the Andalusia region of Spain and has Arabic music in its roots. Usually the song, which may or may not include singing, is played on a guitar; the dance usually includes handclaps and stamping of feet (Smithsonian Folkways.)

Listen to work by composer and neuroscientist Dave Soldier for small ensemble, featuring oud, guitar, and handclaps. Also, hear the flamenco at work in a piece by Soldier for violinist Miranda Cuckson and percussion. Then, there’s music by the Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Also, hear Spanish flamenco guitarist Pedro Soler, and his cellist son, Gaspar Claus from their 2016 record Al Viento. Rounding out the show is some of the soundtrack to the contemporary silent film from Spain, Blancanieves (this Snow White is a female matador in 1920’s Spain), featuring flamenco singer Silvia Perez Cruz and guitarist Juan Gómez. And more.
