#4584, Sonic Meditations

New Sounds | Feb 13, 2023

Listen to a series of sonic meditations, a term coined by Pauline Oliveros, and calming strategies in music by Danny Clay and San Francisco duo The Living Earth Show. And more.

The late composer Pauline Oliveros was a musical pioneer several times over, influencing American music profoundly through her concert works, as well as her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual. Oliveros believed in the act of music-making as a communal art and would lead audiences in Sonic Meditations where everyone in the venue would hum, or sing, or somehow contribute to the “performance.” Additionally, she would sometimes write a work where the score was not traditional notes on a staff, but rather a list of instructions to the performers – “do this, listen to that, match it” almost a Zen-like simplicity -  a so-called “open score.” (New Sounds, #4032.)

Listen to some of her sonic meditations, including a dance score for a production of King Lear and a quiet work, “The Mystery Beyond Matter.” Additionally, listen to music along similar lines by composer Danny Clay and San Francisco-based duo The Living Earth Show, called Music for Hard Times, eight calming strategies in response to the pandemic. Listen to two portions of this work, also based on series of instructions and recorded independently by The Living Earth Show and Danny Clay in April of 2020 in their homes using instruments, voices, field recordings, and found objects.

Plus, meditative work by the German-born, American-based artist Deuter, in a style that blends Eastern and Western musical elements, from the 1980’s. - Caryn Havlik
