#4592, Music for Broken and Malfunctioning Instruments
Hear music made with a ruined piano, mistreated guitars, or a dying synthesizer sound in work by harpist/pianist Victoria Jordanova, guitarist Ed Gerhard, and drummer/synthesist Qasim Naqvi.
Listen to music by drummer, composer, and synthesist Qasim Naqvi, who was part of electronic jazzers Dawn of MIDI. He has also composed chamber and electronic music for film, dance, theater and ensembles and in 2016, made a record exclusively on a malfunctioning old Moog Model D synthesizer. Hear selections from that album, called Chronology.
There’s music using ruined piano by L.A.-based harpist and pianist Victoria Jordanova, who was born in former Yugoslavia. In her Requiem for Bosnia, a sonic lament for a country, the broken piano serves as musical metaphor for the state of Bosnia after the war in the early 1990’s. Then, hear music for disused “cheap pawnshop style guitars” by Ed Gerhard, from his record, House of Guitars.
Also, listen to music by the late Japanese composer Toshiya Sukegawa's 'the eternal morning 1945.8.6,' written to mark the bombing of Hiroshima. The work uses a ruined piano from the site, and features the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, along with electronics. Plus, music by composer, inventor, computer scientist, visual artist, and author Jaron Lanier, recorded after he was allowed back into his home in lower Manhattan in the aftermath of 9/11. - Caryn Havlik
