#4613, Music from the Mediterranean

New Sounds | Apr 13, 2024

Listen to music of the Mediterranean, featuring Boston-based Newpoli, who interpret southern Italian music using an Arab instrument, Persian-Jewish culture in Sephardi/Mizrahi Jewish songs from the group Divahn, and Lebanese-Christian music from Greek singer Savina Yannatou.

Hear Boston-based Neapolitan folkloric group Newpoli, interpreting southern Italy’s taranta tradition, which may also reflect the strong influence of Arab music, Turkish grooves, Mediterranean and Spanish colors, (newpolimusic.com.) There’s also music from the group Divahn, founded by the Persian-American singer, composer, writer, and anthropology professor Galeet Dardashti. Divahn interprets traditional Sephardi/Mizrahi Jewish song, blending Indian, Middle Eastern, and Latin percussion, with vocals spanning Hebrew, Persian, and Arabic.

Also, hear sacred songs where Islamic, Jewish and Christian traditions came together around the 13th Century, some composed by King Alfonso X of Spain, the so-called “King of the Three Religions.” This collection, called Cantigas de Santa Maria, used Christian texts, but fused all three Abrahamic faiths as well as elements from a range of Mediterranean traditions, (Ted Shen, Chicago Reader.)

Then, Greek singer Savina Yannatou performs a Lebanese-Christian song and Moroccan-born Israeli cantor Emil Zrihan sings not in Hebrew, but in Arabic. And more. – Caryn Havlik
