#4614, Music For Hammered Dulcimers
There's music for hammered dulcimers from Brooklyn-based Max ZT, Korean composer Park Jiha, Finnish musician Pauliina Syrjälä, and Laraaji’s electronically-enhanced zither.
Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based Max ZT, the NPR -lauded “Jimi Hendrix of dulcimer,” studied hammered dulcimer from around the world, from Senegal’s Mandinko tradition and India’s santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, along with traditions of Irish and American folk music. Hear music from his solo record, Daybreak, a collection of instrumental meditations, some improvised during lockdown.
Then, listen to music by Pauliina Syrjälä for kantele, the traditional Finnish table-harp. Syrjälä using a few untraditional methods: striking the kantele like a hammered dulcimer with knitting needles and artist paintbrushes. Hear music for electronically enhanced zither, amplified and multi-tracked with layers of reverb and delay from the multi-instrumentalist Laraaji, in collaboration with Brian Eno.
There’s also music by Korean composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Park Jiha who plays the yanggeum (hammered dulcimer) on her latest record, The Gleam, which Glitterbeat describes as a “meditation on the intersection of music and light.’ Plus, music from Lajkó Félix who plays the Hungarian folk zither, the citera, and more. - Caryn Havlik
