#4622, With Bang on a Can All-Stars, at Merkin Hall
From the New Sounds Live concert series, listen to the electric chamber ensemble, Bang on a Can All-Stars, in the 2022 People's Commissioning Fund Concert, recorded live at Kaufman Music Center's Merkin Hall. This annual event has been for years one of the very first crowdfunding experiments - with new works commissioned through small, individual donations from supporters. This concert (barely) contained eight world premieres, including performances of five new arrangements. For this New Sounds, hear five of these pieces along with interviews from composers Aeryn Santillan, Tomeka Reid, and Soo Yeon Lyuh live on stage.
Founded in 1992, the All-Stars are typically a six-piece ensemble: bassist Robert Black, percussionist David Cossin, pianist Vicky Chow (David Friend performed for this show), cellist Arlen Hlusko, guitarist Mark Stewart, and clarinetist Ken Thomson. However, for this performance they are joined by Jen Baker on trombone, David Byrd-Marrow on the horn, and Allison Loggins-Hull on the flute and piccolo, bringing the total of musicians onstage to nine.
Yet for some of these pieces, nine instruments are not enough. Aeryn Santillan’s disconnect. contains samples of the composer’s voicemails while Soo Yeon Lyuh’s See You on the Other Side features the haegeum, a Korean two-stringed instrument. Hear these innovative new works plus a piece by English-born guitarist and improviser Fred Frith, "Which It Is"; a continuation of the Santuario series by friend of Bang on a Can, Jeffrey Brooks with "Santuario II"; and a composition inspired by “wild abandon” from American cellist Tomeka Reid and her work "UNTETHERED". - Laura Boyman
