#4660, New Music From Colombia

New Sounds | Sep 25, 2023

Hear new music from the Colombian diaspora, including cumbia-inspired music by Queens band Combo Chimbita, Japan’s Minyo Crusaders, Berlin-based Lucrecia Dalt, Swiss-based band Palenque la Papayera, and Colombian dance band Bomba Estéreo.

Combo Chimbita, the quartet of Colombian musicians based here in New York, has "taken the traditional cumbia rhythm as a springboard for their own wide-ranging explorations of rock, electronica, and dance music, while remaining rooted in the folklore of Colombia", (Schaefer, 2022). Hear a song that harnesses Afro-Colombian rhythms, a bit of psychedlia, and Carolina Oliveros' majestic voice.

There's also work by Berlin-based experimental musician Lucrecia Dalt channels growing up in Colombia with tropical rhythms and sci-fi storytelling combined with woodwinds, brass, and upright bass, all processed by memory and modular synths. Plus, listen to the Japanese band Minyo Crusaders in collaboration with the Colombian cumbia experimentalists Frente Cumbiero, riffing on a Colombian cumbia tune called “Cumbia Del Monte” (the cumbia of the mountain) and one which references Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji.

Then, hear more cumbia from Colombia by way of Switzerland-based Palenque la Papayera, along with sounds collected from along the Magdalena River in Colombia, by Simón Mejía, founder and co-leader of Bomba Estéreo. Plus, music by dance band Bomba Estéreo, layered violins from Cuban-American multi-instrumentalist Bryan Senti, and more. - Caryn Havlik
