#4677, Visions of the American Southwest

New Sounds | Oct 5, 2024

Hear visions of the American Southwest in music by Switzerland-based two piece Hermanos Gutiérrez, Cuban-American musician Delia Gonzalez, Baltimore-based pedal steel magician Susan Alcorn, music by psychedelic cumbia of Arizona-based Orkesta Mendoza, and others.

Listen to several different conceptions of the American Southwest, perhaps cinematic or psychedelic, in places that conjure New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. There’s music with an instrumental western sound by Switzerland-based Hermanos Gutiérrez, a two piece band of brothers who take their influence from the 1950's Latin America Sound. There’s also music from Tucson’s own Orkesta Mendoza, who take a “psychedelic journey into the heart of Mexican cumbia“, and feature a guest turn from Mexican electronic pioneer Camilo Lara).

Then, hear music by Cuban-American artist Delia Gonzalez, and her “modern electronic soundtrack for the Revisionist Western” (Bandcamp), the 2017 album Horse Follows Darkness. Plus, listen to music from virtuoso guitarist Ry Cooder, work from Norwegian pedal steel player Geir Sundstøl, and ambient country from the NYC-based trio SUSS. Also on the show is music by composer, improviser, and serial collaborator, the Baltimore-based pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn. From her record "Pedernal", with a quintet including guitarist Mary Halvorson, hear the title track, which evokes "the wide-open landscape of northern New Mexico and the mesa for which the piece is named" (AllAboutJazz.com). - Caryn Havlik
