#4679, Music from Mexico

New Sounds | Nov 1, 2022

Hear music from Mexico by marimba-playing cumbia punks Son Rompe Pera, Mexico City-based cellist Mabe Fratti, Brooklyn-based Banda de los Muertos, and Mexican singer Magos Herrera.

Listen to the marimba-based cumbia-punk of Mexico City’s Son Rompe Pera. Truly a sweaty party band, they have a distinctive sound, centered on three brothers who all play marimbas and draw on punk, ska, pop, and the ubiquitous Latin dance rhythm called cumbia. Then, listen to traditional Mexican banda music from Brooklyn-based Banda de los Muertos, featuring members of Slavic Soul Party, Jacob Garchik (Kronos Quartet arranger) and composer Oscar Noriega. Also, listen to the Mexico City-based 9-piece band, Sonido Gallo Negro (Black Rooster Sound), who draw on Peruvian cumbia as well as Amazonian cumbia, huayno, sonidero cumbia, boogaloo and chicha.

Then, there’s music by Mexican singer Magos Herrera, Mexico City-based cellist and composer Mabe Fratti, and a song about a woodpecker that brings together Chinese pipa player Wu Man and San Diego-based son jarocho group Son de San Diego. There’s also new music from Mexican born, New York-based vibraphonist, marimbist, improviser and composer Patricia Brennan, and music for cello and electronics from a film score by Clarice Jensen composed for the Mexican independent feature film Identifying Features. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
