#4690, Folk/Baroque/Contemporary String Music

New Sounds | Dec 8, 2022

Hear fiddle tunes that cross between folk, baroque, and contemporary music by Lodestar Trio, Bjarte Eike and Barokksolisten, and Italian Marco Ambrosini and Ensemble Supersonus.

Listen to new music from Lodestar Trio where baroque meets folk, and classical music violin plays with Scandinavian string instruments. Lodestar Trio is Max Bailie (UK) on violin, Olav Luksengård Mjelva (Norway) on Norwegian Hardanger fiddle and Erik Rydvall (Sweden) on Swedish nyckelharpa. They play music by French baroque composer Francois Couperin in an arrangement by Thomas Ades, and music by Norwegian Olav Luksengård Mjelva.

Then, hear music from an international quintet of musicians led by nyckelharpa virtuoso Marco Ambrosini and the - Ensemble Supersonus, which sets compositions by Biber, Frescobaldi and Hildegard von Bingen next to Swedish folk music, Ottoman court music, and original pieces by each of the band members. Listen to  “old pop songs” from violinist Bjarte Eike and the Norwegian group Barokksolisten, who merrily blend together the sounds of Baroque music, drinking songs from the British Isles, and folk fiddling from various places in Northern Europe.

Plus, there’s music from a duo record by Caoimhin O Raghallaigh (of The Gloaming) and Dan Trueman (founder of Princeton Laptop Orchestra), which stretches and recombines the DNA of Norwegian folk and Irish trad fiddling on a 10-stringed instrument, the Hardanger d’Amore. - Caryn Havlik
