#4702, The African Diaspora in the New World

New Sounds | Jan 15, 2024

Hear music from contemporary descendants of the African diaspora in both North and South America by multi-instrumentalist Jake Blount, The Garifuna Collective, Afro-Peruvian songstress Susana Baca, and Afro-Brazilian singer Virginia Rodrigues.

The Garifuna people of the Caribbean coast of Central America are the descendants of people from West Africa who were to be enslaved in the West Indies. However, the two Spanish ships were shipwrecked in 1635, and never made it to their destination. These West Africans stayed among the indigenous Amerindian group, the Carib people, on the island and together created the Garifuna people. The group The Garifuna Collective, is a multi-generational group of accomplished artists dedicated to preserving the Garifuna language and culture, unique to the tiny Central American nation of Belize. Hear music from their record, Watina, featuring the late co-founder of the group, Andy Palacio.

Then, listen to the Afrofuturism and electronics meet ancient Yoruba rituals and spiritual practice in the music of the Puerto Rican band ÌFÉ, headed by producer and percussionist Otura Mun. There’s also music from Colombia by Monte (Simón Mejía) of dance band Bomba Estéreo, along with music from Afro-Peruvian songstress Susana Baca and Afro-Brazilian singer Virginia Rodrigues.

Plus, hear music rooted in the ring shouts of the Gullah Geechee people by ethnomusicologist, banjo player, fiddler, and producer Jake Blount from his excellent 2020 album, Spider Tales. And more. - Caryn Havlik
