New Sounds marks the 70^th birthday of composer, singer, musician, recording artist, visual artist and teacher of contemplative music and meditation, David Hykes, who performed at the very first New Sounds Live back in September of 1986 at Merkin Hall. The program featured Hykes and the Harmonic Choir with music from the groundbreaking 1983 release, Hearing Solar Winds.

Hykes, who now resides in France, has a long immersion in Eastern and Western sacred music, cosmology, and yogas of sound. He was the first westerner to connect deeply with the "throat-singing" traditions of Mongolia, Tuva and Tibet, and employ overtones which govern all spatial and mathematical relationships. He went on to master the overtone singing known as Harmonic Chant, where one sings low and high notes simultaneously.

For this New Sounds, hear the 2007 re-mastered version of the David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir’s commercial recording of Hearing Solar Winds, from the resonant Thoronet Abbey where overtones were amplified and each voice multiplied.
