#4724, Baroque instruments

New Sounds | Mar 9, 2023

Hear new music with old instruments: lute by Josef Van Wissem with guitarist and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, harpsichord and electronics by Polish composer Jacaszek, and violas da gamba of the group Science Ficta playing hammer-ons and pull-offs by New York composer Molly Herron.

Listen to some of Josef Van Wissem’s music for Baroque and/or Renaissance lutes in combination with the electric guitar atmospheres of musician and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. Their latest release, American Landscapes, contains dark, long-form and hypnotic drone works, including the title track, which was commissioned and performed by Stephen Petronio Dance Company in New York.

Also, listen to work by Polish keyboardist and electroacoustic composer Jacaszek from his 2011 record Glimmer, a piece that features Baroque harpsichord and lots of electronics. Then, listen to Norwegian guitarist Stephan Meidell and his ensemble of baroque violin, Hardanger fiddle, and harpsichord.

There’s also new music for violas da gamba by New York-based composer Molly Herron. The viola da gamba looks and sounds like a cello, yet has frets like a guitar, but is played with a bow. However, Molly Herron wrote parts involving hammer-ons and pull-offs for the three members of Science Ficta (Science fiction + Musica ficta). Then, hear music from an international quintet of musicians led by nyckelharpa virtuoso Marco Ambrosini and the - Ensemble Supersonus, which also involves harpsichord. And more.  - Caryn Havlik
