Listen to music from Behind the Wallpaper, a work by composer-lyricist Alex Temple, addressing her own experience with transitioning and othering. Featuring Los Angeles artist and vocalist Julia Holter, who was chosen for her “stylistic fluidity and vulnerability”, and Chicago’s Spektral string quartet, Temple says that “the dreamlike images in the songs were inspired by my experience with gender transition. But my hope is that the story will feel familiar to anyone who has ever felt alienated from the broader culture”, (New Amsterdam liner notes).
Also, hear selections from “Landfall,” a work by New York-based Laurie Anderson in collaboration with Kronos Quartet reflecting on the destruction from Superstorm Sandy which flooded Anderson’s building, and turned things she’d saved - keyboards, papers, books – into waste. Then, listen to Kronos Quartet’s arrangement of a traditional folk song with the distinctive voice of banjo-playing singer, composer, & Silk Road Ensemble Director, Rhiannon Giddens.
Plus, hear music by singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, Becca Stevens, in collaborative string arrangements of her songs with Attacca Quartet. Also, listen to "Songs of Ascension" by composer, vocalist, choreographer, and innovator Meredith for voice and the shruti box (a drone instrument from India), together with string quartet.
