There's new duo music by heavyweight global stars Kayhan Kalhor and Toumani Diabaté, and music from the duo Grandbrothers. Plus, work by electronic music producers Kate NV and Noah Wall, and a new score by Jocelyn Pook for a re-rendering in ballet of Jungle Book.
Hear “a subtle and beautiful dialogue” between Kayhan Kalhor and Toumani Diabaté. Kayhan Kalhor is probably the world’s leading player of the kamancheh, the spike fiddle of Persian classical music. Toumani Diabaté. is similarly placed in the world of West African kora music; the kora is a 21-string double harp that’s central to the Manding tradition of Mali, Gambia, etc. The two serial collaborators have teamed up for the first time with each other to record an album improvising on traditional themes, for Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. Hear their combined sounds of “minimalism and trance,” from their 2023 record, The Sky Is The Same Colour Everywhere, (John Schaefer).
Hear ‘shiny, sproingy, plastic’ music from Russian sound sculptor and composer Kate NV, from her record, Wow, whose proceeds will benefit War Child, an organization that supports children and their families impacted by conflict (RVNG Intl). There’s also work by Brooklyn composer Noah Wall makes compositions of the processed recordings of human speech using a unique hybrid of autotune meets musique concrete on his latest, Speech Patterns. Also, listen to new music from the Swiss-German duo Grandbrothers, who've been messing around with and electronically processing pianos since 2012. For their latest, they also added a third bandmate, the haze of echoes enabled by recording in the 700-year old Cologne Cathedral.
There’s also trio music from NYC-based violinist and composer Katherine Kyu Hyeon Lim, duo work from guitarist Steve Gunn and pianist/composer David Moore (Bing & Ruth, and a new soundtrack by English composer and violist Jocelyn Pook for the Akram Khan production Jungle Book reimagined.
