It’s the most wonderful time of the month, when we showcase the new releases that reached our earholes for May 2023. Hear electro-kulintang music by Pantayo, gamelan music by Brian Baumbusch, and new music by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir.
Toronto-based Pantayo is a Filipina kulintang ensemble who combine percussive metallophones and drums from kulintang traditions of Southern Philippines with electronic and synth-based grooves for some serious gong-chime-pop. There’s also Indonesian gamelan music and minimalism in work by American composer Brian Baumbusch, featuring the group Nata Swara.
Then, hear new music from London’s Penguin Café and their dedication to the late composer Harold Budd – but in an Afro-Cuban vein - from their forthcoming album, Rain After Seven, due in July. Also, listen to new music from the band Sexmob led by slide trumpeter and arranger Steven Bernstein from their latest, The Hard Way.
There’s new work by Sardinian prepared guitarist Paolo Angeli and a selection from a career retrospective collection of work by Ohio-born “unguitarist” Rick Deitrick. Plus, listen to some of a new recording of work by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir, and more. - Caryn Havlik
