#4765, With Robert Curgenven and Yue Song, From New Music Dublin 2023
There's music by Irish-based, Australian-born sound artist/composer Robert Curgenven; and new works by Chinese-born, Irish-based composer Yue Song, recorded in part at New Music Dublin.
Ireland-based, Australian-born artist Robert Curgenven's recorded work emphasizes physicality in his approach to sound, and how it relates to air. While he also has presented sound installations, as in a park near the concert hall at new Music Dublin, he is also into creating unusual sounds from the mechanical pipe organ and that tracker action. His way of controlling the flow of air to the pipe means that sometimes one hears the air before the pipe starts to “speak”. Choosing to under-pressurize the air can make the pipes sigh, as in his work for pipe organ and dub sound system, Tailte Cré-Umha (Bronze Lands), inspired by the movement of Irish copper and Cornish tin to Europe. Listen to some of that composition recorded live at the Cork Midsummer Festival, along with a piece from his 2017 album SIRÈNE, which is made of recordings of small mechanical organs of churches in Cornwall.
Also, hear music by Chinese-born, Ireland-based composer Yue Song who also considers air, and the differences between the air in Beijing and the way the wind and air feel in Ireland in her series of pieces, Senses. The series works with a string duo, then a string trio, using minimalist repeating fragments, all the way up to the expansive might of the Crash Ensemble.
