#4774, Sonic Threads of William Basinski

New Sounds | Jul 20, 2023

American experimental musician, composer, and sound artist William Basinski might be best known for his four-volume album The Disintegration Loops, constructed from rapidly decaying twenty-year-old tape-loops that he’d made. The reel-to-reel tape itself was disintegrating, and Basinski allowed the loops to play continuously while he recorded them digitally, capturing the death of these sounds to create the work. But, for this New Sounds, hear a recent release of an older recording by Basinski along with remixes he has done of work by Hatis Noit, and two different remixes of David Bowie’s “Subterraneans” with Alva Noto.

There’s some of  Basinski’s 1979 “eerie and early” work The Clocktower at the Beach, built around the sounds of a night shift at a factory and broken 1950’s TVs. Also, listen to work by London-based Japanese vocalist and composer Hatis Noit from her recent album, Aura. Then, hear a remix of the work by William Basinski. Plus, two remixes of David Bowie's song “Subterraneans” (off the 1977 album, Low) from William Basinski together with Alva Noto (aka German artist, musician, and label owner Carsten Nicolai) -both an instrumental and one with guest vocalist Martin Gore of Depeche Mode. -Caryn Havlik
