From the ongoing collaboration between New Sounds and the Ojai Music Festival, hear works by singer, banjo player, and composer Rhiannon Giddens; members of the Iranian Female Composers Association; pipa virtuoso Wu Man; and kamancheh master Kayhan Kalhor, all recorded live at the 2023 Ojai Music Festival.
Rhiannon Giddens speaks to what drew her to be the Music Director of the 2023 Ojai Festival, stretching boundaries and perceptions: asking aloud who gets to decide what is classical music, and what is folk music, music of the world, and how it gets programmed and how these expectations can be upended.
Listen to works by members of the Iranian Female Composers Association, Nasim Khorassani and Niloufar Nourbakhsh, performed by cellist Karen Ouzounian, Rhiannon Giddens, and multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi. Also, listen to Giddens’ collaboration on banjo with Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man, where she sings in Mandarin, as well as her take on a traditional string band tune with fiddle player Justin Robinson (formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops.) Then, hear Rhiannon Giddens’ wrenching song, “At the Purchaser’s Option”, with Francesco Turrisi, in an arrangement for piano and voice. And more.
