#4812, Ojai On The Air 2023, Part 3

New Sounds | Nov 8, 2023

From the ongoing collaboration between New Sounds and the Ojai Music Festival, listen to pipa master Wu Man play ancient Chinese music and new music by Chinese-American composer Lei Liang. Also, there’s music from Attacca Quartet playing works by Caroline Shaw and John Adams, all recorded live at the 2023 Ojai Music Festival.

Composer, collaborator, and educator Wu Man is a master of the pipa— a pear-shaped, four-stringed Chinese lute with a rich history spanning centuries. [For more, see Songlines’ History of the Pipa.] Wu Man has premiered new works for pipa, played with Kronos Quartet, Silk Road Ensemble, The Knights (and many other collaborators), and is the recipient of the 2023 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA.) From Ojai, she plays new music by Chinese-American composer Lei Liang with Attacca Quartet violist Nathan Schram. Also, hear Wu Man play centuries-old music discovered in the Mogao Caves in the Chinese city of Dunhuang on the edge of the Gobi Desert, as she explains in her Ojai Talk with John Schaefer.

Also, listen to contemporary work as played by Attacca Quartet, “a true quartet for modern times,” (AttaccaQuartet.com.) The innovative ensemble effortlessly takes on traditional classical repertoire to electronica, video game music and contemporary collaborations.  Hear their performances of works by Pulitzer Prize Winning composers Caroline Shaw and John Adams, also recorded live at Ojai.

This is Part 3 of a four-part series for 2023. The performances and interview were recorded at the 2023 Ojai Music Festival. - Caryn Havlik
