#4815, With Magos Herrera From Soundcheck

The Mexican singer Magos Herrera has a distinctive, elegant, and expressive voice, and while she’s usually thought of as a jazz singer, she’s also done a lot of collaborating with artists from the worlds of pop, classical music, and Brazilian music. Largely based here in New York, Herrera has recently put out a new album, called Aire, which features twelve songs and includes her new compositions, commissioned by Chamber Music America's New Jazz Works, and jewels from the Great Latin American Songbook, in a kind of communal response to the isolation of the pandemic, when most of the songs were written. On the album, the works are performed by her jazz trio augmented by a 21-piece orchestra under the artistic direction of Eric and Colin Jacobsen.
Magos Herrera and PUBLIQuartet play music from Aire on Nov. 17 at National Sawdust.

From the Soundcheck Podcast series, Herrera, her trio, and members of the Brooklyn-based orchestra called The Knights present some of these jazz songs, rich with drama and feeling, in-studio. Plus, hear some selections from the record, Aire, where elements of jazz, classical chamber orchestration, and Latin music are woven tightly together. – Caryn Havlik
