Listen to classical chamber ensembles being used in musically subversive ways in work by Russian-British composer, producer, and DJ Gabriel Prokofiev, Canadian composer Nick Schofield, and vocalist/composer/producer Arone Dyer.

Vocalist, musician, composer & producer Arone Dyer is a founding member of the duo Buke and Gase (ranging from invented instruments to contemporary classical music) & somewhat-hyper-pop duo Mistresses. Together with 13 member European ensemble, s t a r g a z e, hear new avant-garde art-rock -chamber-pop tunes- from their collaboration ARONE x S T A R G A Z E.

Then, listen to music for string sextet featuring UNLTD Collective, electronic bass, angular beats, and field recordings by Gabriel Prokofiev, the Russian-British composer, producer, DJ, and Artistic Director of the Nonclassical record label and nightclub. His multi-movement work, Breaking Screens, inspired by Beethoven’s pastoral symphony, addresses ideas of consumerism, digital life and impending crises brought about by our troubled relationship with nature.

There’s music from Canadian composer and “synth maven” Nick Schofield who deploys chamber music instruments in unexpected ways on his latest record, Ambient Ensemble, where a playful ensemble of double bass, violin, clarinet, and vocals centers around Schofield's piano improvisations. Also, hear music by Boston-based composer, producer, and engineer Doug Bielmeier for the NYC-based chamber group Unheard-of//Ensemble. The work, somewhat Reich-ian with its repeated interlocking riffs for clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and electronics is called “Corporate Responsibility Pledge” and comes from Bielmeier’s 2023 release, Music for Billionaires. - Caryn Havlik
