#4865, Open Scoring

New Sounds | Apr 4, 2024

Hear music which leaves interpreting the page(s) open to the performers – what the sound will be, and how it will move from one place to another. There's Terry Riley’s “In C”, in a version by cellist Maya Beiser and two percussionists; flexibly-scored and not instrument-specific work by the late Pauline Oliveros, and a pulse-driven work from English composer Andrew Poppy.

Listen as cellist, producer, and adventurous artist Maya Beiser, turns Terry Riley’s minimalist classic, “In C”, into a captivating soundscape with her cello. In her version, the open-scored page is transformed into a series of drones and live cello loops, along with contributions from two of her long-time collaborators, the drummers Shane Shanahan and Matt Kilmer. Cellist Maya Beiser plays Terry Riley’s In C(ello) on Saturday, April 6, at National Sawdust.

Then, listen to English composer Andrew Poppy and his work, “Playing the Pulse”, which is a series of instructions that begins: “For any group of instruments, with a minimum of two, if one is a keyboard”. It continues with “All instruments should aim to PLAY ALL OR MOST OF THE TIME”. Hear the ensemble, CoMA (Contemporary Music for All) London from a collection of archival works released by the composer in 2023.

There’s also music by the late Pauline Oliveros, who was a pioneer in electronic music, a pioneer in alternate tunings, and in sonic meditations – scores with instructions instead of notes. Hear her “Tuning Meditation” along with the work, “70 Chords for Terry”. - Caryn Havlik
